here in new york last night to call on congress to do something about gun violence. but the nra said it would fight any limits that lawmakers try to place on gun ownership. the head of the nra renewed his call forearmed officers in schools. and the backlash against assault weapons is continuing. several stores in colorado are no longer selling them. one store owner said he didn't ever want to open a newspaper and find out something he had sold had been used in a tragedy like the one in newtown. the country is so divided on this issue. the polls suggest people want congress to take some action, if nothing more to close loopholes, perhaps ban some of the high capacity magazines. so you think something is going to happen, but you have to wonder if it has the votes in the house to get it passed. even that assault weapons ban from '94 to 2004, even when that passed in the '90s, it passed by two or three votes. so republicans now control the house. i don't know how anything gets through or if it is, it's a baby step. >> and as you heard from the nra, they don't seem to be budging on the is

after robert kennedy was killed and said, we have ten days before the nra gets mobilized. we have ten days to accomplish the bill was sitting in the judiciary committee, the gun bans, from the time when john f. kennedy was killed. and now martin luther king jr. had been killed, robert kennedy was killed. he said, you've got ten days to mobilize. you've got to get this done. they did what they could and they came up with a much smaller bill which was signed regretfully by lbj in october. >> i don't have the historical perspective that andrea does, but i have covered all the -- >> you didn't cover that '68 bill? >> no, i missed it. but i have covered the four instances of mass gun violence under obama, and i have to say the scariest thing to me with respect to newtown was when i g-chatted my fellow editor in new york to plot out coverage, and we knew exactly what to do because we had done it three times before. it had gotten so routine and so disturbing to us and i'm worried i'll be writing the same story. >> we can't desensitize ourselves to this, though. >> listen, we're not going to.

is this report about what is ahead in terms of the gun control fight. we heard from the nra friday. let me read you a few sentences -- that was nearly 20 years ago in 1993. we will hear from that testimony in a couple of minutes. we want to get your calls and what is ahead in gun-control. roy is joining us from north carolina, the independent line, good morning. caller: it could be a bitter fight but i think some drastic action needs to be taken. it should be at least as burdensome for the gun owner as it is for a car owner. registration, insurance, testing, everything -- handguns are a big problem, too. i think it is so bad that the president should do some kind of executive order and put a moratorium on military rifles, at least, because around here in western north carolina, there are gun shops and people waiting for four hours to get to this ar-15. they say they will not take it out of the box, the majority of them. they will either have it as an investment or have it grandfathered in. this is like undetectable poison. 300 million guns that have proliferated the whole country. we have plent

if there were not a gun involved. yesterday the head of the nra came out ripping -- >> less than 24 hours later. >> bill: ripping into bob costas. here's wayne. >> just disgusted. i mean they tune in to watch a sporting event and meanwhile what they get in regard to this cold-blooded murder that took place is they get a national sportscaster whining about his social agenda that he wants adopted to ban firearms and ban handguns. i mean the american public, it is shameful. they're disgusted by it. >> by the way shout out to the nra for putting a guy named lapierrre in charge of their organization. that's great. >> they know how to do it. >> did he succeed the last guy mr. fancy pants? >> bill: lapierrre says there is an answer here. this wouldn't have happened if only -- right dan do we have -- >> he doesn't say anything -- he wouldn't have said a thing last night if this woman had saved her life by having a firearm available. >> how about the baby? >> bill: why didn't the 2-month-old baby have a gun? >> you can have
